Best Makeup Brushes for Beginners

Makeup Brushes

If you’re new to the world of makeup, you might be overwhelmed by the variety of makeup brushes available. With so many shapes, sizes, and materials to choose from, it can be hard to know which brushes you actually need.

That’s why we’ve got you covered!

Follow our guide to get the lowdown on our all the best makeup brushes for beginners and some of our top tips on how to use them.

What’s in a Full Makeup Brush Set?

With a choice of so many makeup brushes, it can be hard to know where to start. We’re here to give our recommendations for what you need to complete a full makeup brush set, to take your makeup application from 0-100!

Foundation Brush:

A foundation brush is used to apply liquid or cream foundation evenly over your face.

There are several types, but a dense, flat or angled brush works well for most people.

The flat shape allows for optimal coverage and even application over your complexion. Angled brushes offer the more accurate application needed to follow the contours of the face. If you love to use cream contour products – this one’s for you!

How to use: Decant a few pumps of foundation onto the back of your hand. Dip the brush into the foundation and apply in circular motions, start in the center of the face and blend outwards.

Concealer Brush:

A small, flat brush is essential to apply concealer to specific areas of the face, as it helps to concentrate the product in your targeted areas, such as under the eyes or blemishes.

How to use: Use the doe-foot applicator to gently apply the concealer. Once applied to the desired areas, reach for your concealer brush to blend the product into the skin.

Expert Tip: Use tapping motions when applying concealer to blemishes or dark spots.

Powder Brush:

Wanting to lock in your make up look? Add a powder brush to your kit! Whether you’re applying a loose or pressed powder, look for a large and rounded fluffy brush for the most natural and effortless application.

How to use: Dip the brush into your powder and tap off any excess before sweeping it over your face.

Highlighter Brush:

Obsessed with that gorgeous glow? Look for a brush with a slightly tapered shape for accuracy when applying the product.

This will allow your cheekbones to naturally pop, so you can leave the tin-man aesthetic in 2016.

How to use: Lightly cover the brush in your highlighter of choice and sweep it over the high points of your face to accentuate your natural beauty.

Eyeshadow Brushes:

There are numerous eyeshadow brushes to choose from, but to help get you started, a flat crease brush and a blending brush are essential!

Eyeshadow Blending Brush:

Designed to perfect any eyeshadow look, a fluffy, rounded brush will provide a precise application and a smooth blend.

How to use: Dip the brush into your eye shadow and apply it to your lids, blending in circular motions as you go.

Flat Crease Packing Brush:

If you like to add a pressed or loose glitter to your eye makeup look, a Flat Crease Packing Brush is a must! Its flat, dense bristles allow you to maximise the pigment of your statement shadows on the lid.

How to use: Simply press your brush into your desired glitter and use the same motion on your lid.

Expert Tip: Before dipping your brush in your shadow, wet it with a couple of sprays of our IRL All Day Filter Fixing Spray. This will further amplify your shine and keep your glitters in place all day…you’re welcome!

Angled Blending Brush

We also recommend adding an angled blending brush to your collection – especially if you like to add eyeshadow to your lower lash line. The angled shape allows you to accurately follow the contours of the under eye for a more concentrated, defined application. No panda eyes here!

Eyeliner Brush:

If you’re a fan of applying gel or cream eyeliner to your lash line, an eyeliner brush will be your go-to!

Look for a brush with a small, angled tip for a precise application.

How to use: To use, dip the brush into your eyeliner and apply it to your lash line, starting at the inner corner and working it out.

Expert Tip: If you’ve made any mistakes – don’t worry. Simply take a makeup wipe or makeup remover and wipe away any smudges.
